Hypnagogic Hallucinations Symptoms

Hypnagogia, or hypnagogic, or hypnopompic, are all terms which basically point at the particular periods right before falling asleep or right after waking up. Bearing that in mind, let’s look at the symptoms of these sleep disorders, which are a little bit difficult to classify under nice sub-heading due to their nature.

General Hallucination Symptoms: CATEGORIES

Right before falling asleep or right after waking up while still in a semi dream like state:

  • Hearing voices or sounds – this is called Auditory hallucinations
  • Seeing demons, monsters, creatures, other – these are the Visual hallucinations
  • Feeling that somebody or something is touching you – Tactilehallucinations
  • Feeling a certain taste – Gustatory
  • Feeling of moving or flying, basically movement from A to B – Kinaesthetic

Specific Individual Hypnagogic Hallucinations Symptoms / Experiences

  • Vivid hallucinations
  • Feeling as if your body is becoming bigger and bigger
  • Moving geometric objects flying around or approaching and disappearing
  • Seeing points or shapes in an otherwise complete darkness
  • Seeing curves or shapes sort of dancing around in various complex patterns
  • Feeling of being attacked
  • Unable to move as if paralyzed and unable to call for help
  • Seeing faces of people (usually strangers)

  • Hearing people or creatures talking to you either in a language you understand or not
  • Seeing demons
  • Seeing various terrifying creatures both near or far from you
  • Feeling that something or someone is in the room with you but you can not see
  • Feeling of evil around you but you don’t see
  • Something or someone grabbing you or touching you
  • Feeling physical pressure usually on the chest causing shortness in breath
  • Waking up then realizing that’s a dream, then repeating and not able to come out of the dream

As you may imagine there are a lot more different types of hypnagogic hallucinations’ symptoms because they tend to be pretty specific to the person experiencing them, however, the list above should give you an idea of what kinds of things have already been reported.
