Risks of Not Using CPAP

If you do not use CPAP regularly, you unnecessarily expose yourself to a myraid of risks

1. Hypertension: Hypertension also known as blood pressure is a dangerous condition which can cause many other conditions such as heart attacks and strokes. Studies estimate that 60-70% of sleep apnea patients suffer from hypertension. Studies in animals have shown that a risk of not using CPAP regularly is development of hypertension.

2.Coronary Heart Disease: Sleep apnea due will affect the blood vessels and indirectly cause heart disease by:

  • Activating your sympathetic nervous system
  • Causes problems in the inner lining of your
    veins
  • Causes inflammation
  • Promotes problems in your metabolic regulation

3.Stroke: When enough oxygen does not reach your brain, it will cause your veins to dilate. This in addition to the above factors causes a drastic increase in the chances of a stroke occurring in people who have obstructive sleep apnea. Approximately 40-50% of people who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea and do not use CPAP suffer from a stroke at a point in their lives.

4.Heart Failure: When suffering from sleep apnea, the lack of oxygen may cause the blood vessels in your lungs to constrict, this will increase the blood pressure and over time it may lead to failure of the right side of the heart.

5.Death: Many of the above conditions if they occur during the night when someone is sleeping can cause sudden death. The chances of you dying at night while sleeping if not using CPAP is increased.

If you do not use CPAP regularly, you expose yourselves to the above problems every single time you sleep. So make sure to use CPAP therapy regularly and save yourself from any of the above conditions. CPAP therapy is proven to keep your air passageway open, deliver pressurized air continuously. Thus if you use a CPAP machine you can rest in peace in the knowledge that none of the above problems can occur at any time.

  1. I think death is a bit extreme, but ya, definitely one should always use their CPAP mask

  2. I was using my CPAP kind of on and off and I didn’t know there are so many risks associated with not using it regularly. Thanks for the article.
