Sleep disorder is a condition which stops you from relaxing and peaceful sleeping; this may cause dysfunction and sleepiness during daytime. There are around 80 various kinds in sleep disorders. Disruptions during sleep could be caused due to a number of problems that include night terrors and Bruxism. The most common sleep disorders are: Insomnia, Sleep apnea, Cataplexy, Narcolepsy, Parasomnias, Restless legs syndrome (RLS), Hypopnea syndrome, Rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD), Periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), Somnambulism, Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), circadian rhythm sleep disorder, Sleep paralysis, Nocturia and Somniphobia.

Following are the most common sleep disorders in teens:

Restless Legs Syndrome – The sleep disorder in which a teenager faces involuntary twitches in legs and arms during sleep is known as restless legs syndrome. During sleep an individual sometimes may not wake up due to these twitches, but he may start feeling its effects in the morning or next day for example: he aches all over or feels tired.

Insomnia – It is a sleep disorder in which one finds it hard to fall or stay asleep; Insomnia is mostly caused by stress. The stress might be of any kind like some teenagers are found stressed about friends or peer pressure.

Delayed sleep phase syndrome –  It is a kind of circadian rhythm sleep disorder in which teenagers produce melatonin that regulates waking and sleeping pattern, late at night. The main cause of this sleep disorder is that teenager might not be ready to sleep, even though it is getting late or he has to get up early in the morning.

Affects Of Sleep Disorders

Teens that are suffering from sleep disorders are not only affected by drowsiness, fatigue that is associated with sleep disorders may affect different aspects of life of teenagers. Due to sleep disorders, some teenagers develop the habit of sleeping during lecture in class which can badly affect their academic performance and reputation in class. Being tired, some teenagers don’t take part in co-curricular activities, especially activities that include physical movements. Some teenagers fall asleep during their part time job which may affect their performance. Teenagers who have got sleep disorders also have behavior issues like irritability that affects their relationships with friends and family members. Teenagers with circadian rhythm sleep disorder, get late for their schools because of staying asleep, when they are supposed to be up.

Amount  Of Sleep Is Necessary For A Teenager

Averagely, a teenager needs 8 to 12 hours of peaceful sleep every night. If you go to bed at 10 p.m., then you should sleep till 7 a.m. in order to stay healthy. Sometimes, it is not possible to get required sleep, especially when you need to wake up early in the morning to catch your bus or do your work out. Your sleep affects every aspect of your personality and life. It affects your relations, your performance at school, your efficiency at work place and even your moods. In order to keep fit one has to take at least 8 hours of sleep.

Solutions To Sleep Disorders In Teenagers

There are some solutions you may go for, in order to get rid of sleep disorders:

  • Try to take a nap of around 30 minutes after school.
  • Darken your whole room when the bedtime approaches.
  • Set a bedtime routine.
  • Never watch TV at night and avoid late night chats with friends.
  • Don’t sleep in daytime as it affects your sleep at night.
  • Try to wind up your all work before bedtime.

Don’t argue with anyone before bedtime as it will keep you thinking whole night.
