Common Sleep Disorders – Sleep Issues That May Be Affecting You

We all have experienced sleeping problems at least once in our life time. Most of the time they are minor sleep issues that have gone off themselves without taking much attention or cure. Only a slight change in lifestyle did wonders to rectify these problems to a great extent. But this is not the case every time, sleep problems may cause some serious health conditions and you need to be well aware of common sleep disorders.

Signs And Common Symptoms of Sleep Disorders

How would you determine whether your sleep problem is a passing annoyance or symptom of common sleep disorder? A good start is to scrutinize your symptoms. A close watch on your daytime sleep deprivations will lead you to a solid conclusion about your sleep issues. Here is a list of common symptoms, if your answer to any of these questions is “yes”; you are surely dealing with a sleep disorder.

  • Often feel sleepy or irritable during the day?
  • Have difficulty staying awake while reading or watching television?
  • Fall asleep while you drive?
  • Have difficulty concentrating?
  • Often feel tired or told by people around you that you look exhausted?
  • Have little control over your emotions and you easily get angry to your children?
  • Feel like taking a nap everyday after lunch?
  • Take caffeinated beverages 4 to 5 times a day to keep yourself going?

Common Sleep Disorder Types

I am sure 90 out of 100 people reading this article would have answered “yes” to at least one question. This signifies that 90 out of 100 people suffer from one or other sleeping disorders. There are over 80 types of sleep disorders recognized by the medical communities but most common sleep disorders are:

  • Insomnia: difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep.
  • Hypersomnia: its symptoms are opposite insomnia
  • Children Bedwetting
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea: Airway obstruction while sleeping
  • Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome (DSPS)
  • Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (ASPS)
  • Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Syndrome
  • Hypopnea Syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Nocturia
  • Cataplexy
  • Snoring
  • Night Terror
  • Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Sound Sleep is Mandatory for Optimal Health

Fortunately, once a sleep disorder is diagnosed there are treatment options available. However, these sleep disorders are often undiagnosed as people are unaware of them until they are told by their spouse of family members. Sound sleep is a prime functionality of a healthy body. Restful of sleep is mandatory for optimal health and can affect weight, mood, hormonal level and thus your overall performance.
