What is apnea
Apnea is a certain time period during which a person can not breathe (“a” stands for without and “pnea” stands for breathing). There are 2 cases when this could occur during sleep:
1) It could occur in the case if a person has central sleep apnea. This is when there are problems in the brain and it does not, for whatever reason, activate the muscles required for breathing.
2) It could occur in the case if a person has obstructive sleep apnea. This is when there is some blockage in the passage ways of the person, either in the nose, or in the mouth or the pharynx and this “obstructs” the breathing.
Note: Did you know that holding your breath is considered to be apnea?
