Can Long Periods Of Sleep Cause Hypnagogic Hallucinations?

The perception in the absence of stimulus is actually called hallucination and the position in between sleep and wakefulness is a hypnagogic situation. To some extent, people consider it a state of dream but now it is considered that it is actually a transitional state in between sleep and wakefulness in which a person can have some unknown perceptions in the absence of external stimuli which can have perceptions of real stimuli. These can be visual, tactile or other sensory happenings like Tetris visual effect.

These perceptions are mostly vivid and disturbing for the person who experiences them. A soft form of Hallucinations is a disturbance that can be caused. Audible Hallucinations are also very common in which people can feel anyone talking near them. These can be a part of tetrad of narcolepsy that comprises:

  • Sleeping excessive in daytime
  • Cataplexy
  • Sleep paralysis

Causes of Hypnagogic Hallucinations:

It is mostly common in young people and children because their mind are developing and making pathways and it leads to some mixed thinking. It can happen to mentally ill people and can happen to male or females equally. Some people having fear of being mentally ill can also get into such situations. And of course excessive sleeping can also cause hypnagogic hallucinations as it is the in between state and excessive sleepers can get into it. It can be sometimes considered a sleep disorder as it can be due to excessive sleeping or can be due to sleeping after extreme restlessness.

Physical Signs:

Normally there are no physical signs related to such problems.


  • Due to narcolepsy
  • Sleep terrors in children
  • There can be a drug abuse
  • Partial seizures

Hypnagogic Hallucinations Treatment:

If such hallucinations are experienced by someone, then it is very necessary to see a doctor as it can be due to any health issue caused by restlessness. Taking proper rest can also be very effective.

Repetitive occurring of such events is not considered normal. In such cases it is necessary to see a psychologist or any mental health expert that might be able to explore the causes and help the patient to get rid of such sleep disorders.
