Suffering from sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep deprivation, narcolepsy etc., is not unusual in today’s time. There have been a lot of reports about people suffering from numerous sleep disorders, due to their lifestyle, work schedules, and other activities in life. That is why, these days, there are already a lot of different treatments and remedies for sleep disorders. However, not all people find certain treatments for sleep disorders effective. Lots of people are already turning to a more holistic and natural treatments to improve symptoms of sleep disorders. And one herbal treatment that has been used by many is St. John’s Wort.

What is St. John’s Wort? Is it Effective for Sleep Disorders?

St. John’s Wort or Hypericum perforatum is a type of herb that is characterized by yellow flowers. It contains hypericin and hyperforin as the main active ingredients of St. John’s Wort. Those 2 active ingredients of St. John’s Wort can help in improving sleep disorders, specifically insomnia. Not only insomnia, but St. John’s Wort can also help in improving depression symptoms. For most people who tried using St. John’s Wort for their sleep disorders, they said that it really did some improvements to their sleep cycles.

How Does St. John’s Wort Work for Sleep Disorders?

Past researches suggest that St. John’s Wort work by preventing neurons and nerve cells in the brain from reabsorbing serotonin (chemical messenger). Other studies suggest that St. John’s Wort can help in reducing protein levels involved in the immune system’s function, which can help in improving sleep cycle disturbances. St. John’s Wort does not produce sleep inducing effect to a person, it helps improving sleep disorders (insomnia, narcolepsy and sleep deprivation) by improving overall quality of sleep. St. John’s Wort enhances sleep as it balances sleep cycles by regulating normal sleep and wake cycles.

What to Consider before Taking St. John’s Wort for Sleep Disorders:

It is of utmost important to talk to your physician or doctor before taking St. John’s Wort or any other herbal and natural remedies for any medical conditions. Sometimes, St. John’s Wort can produce effects and unwanted interactions with your current medication taken, or it can aggravate other present medical conditions. Talking to your physician can help in preventing side effects or even adverse effects when taking St. John’s Wort, for they can help you identify your risks. St. John’s Wort can be effective in treating sleep disorders to some people.
