It is very important to get enough hours of sleep every single night for a person to perform and be at his or her best during the day. However, there are numerous different sleep disorders that can prevent people in getting a good quality of sleep during the night and can leave them tired, groggy, and not able to perform at their best during the day. One of the many sleep disorders that can affect a person’s quality of sleep is sleepwalking. Sleepwalking or somnambulism is a type of sleep disorder that causes a person to walk during sleep and perform other activities during sleep. Sleepwalking is very common in children, but adults can also suffer from sleepwalking.

There are several different causes for sleepwalking. Sleepwalking in both children and adults can be caused by genetics or familial tendencies, anxiety, stress, mental or psychological disorders, and even other medical conditions. Children who belong in a family of some known sleepwalker family members, then those children are 10 times more at risk to suffer from sleepwalking.

How to Avoid Sleepwalking

Sleepwalking does not possess any health risks to people who are suffering from sleepwalking, however, sleepwalking can cause injuries and even life threatening situations when not managed properly. There are ways on how to avoid occurrences of sleepwalking episodes.

  1. To effectively and totally avoid sleepwalking, it will be beneficial if you will know the exact causative factor of your sleepwalking. If the exact cause is determined, treating it can really help in totally preventing sleepwalking episodes in the future.
  2. If you are already a known sleepwalker, you can ask a family member or others to monitor your sleeping habits, such as the time you fall asleep, the time you wake up, and the time you will have your sleepwalking episode.
  3. Then after you were able to note the usual or common time when your sleepwalking episode will happen, you can then set an alarm for you to wake up just before the time you will commonly have your sleepwalking episode. Doing such can help in avoiding sleepwalking episode. But one downside of waking up in the middle of the night is that some people will find it difficult to go back to sleep.
  4. Making sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night can help in preventing sleepwalking that is caused by lack of sleep or sleep deprivation.
