Insomnia Statistics | Interesting Insomnia Facts & Numbers

Here is a compilation article on insomnia statistics. By far not a complete and exhaustive list, but it clearly gives the impression about the scope of this sleep disorder.

General Insomnia Statistics

  • Women are more likely to suffer from insomnia than men (some sources say double)
  • Almost 100% of all those who have depression also have insomnia
  • Of those with chronic pain approximately 65% report having sleep disorders such as insomnia
  • We sleep 20% less today than humans in the last century
  • 60% drove while being sleepy and 37% admit to falling asleep at the wheel

Multi-level Connection

Those who do not get enough sleep are around 30% more likely to gain weight (lack of sleep leads to increase in appetite) and then once they gain weight they are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders like sleep apnea and consequently they are more likely to get insomnia

USA Specific Numbers

  • 37%-48% of U.S. adults reported problems with insomnia out of which roughly half did not discuss this with their doctor
  • Of these people 20% suffer from severe insomnia
  • Among diagnosed insomnia patients 41% are untreated
