Melatonin Deficiency Can Cause Insomnia

At some point in a person’s life, he or she can always experience difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night due to stress or caffeine intake, however, if difficulty sleeping and staying asleep happens regularly, as in every night, he or she must be suffering Insomnia. Insomnia is a common type of sleep disorder that can affect almost anyone. One possible cause why a person can suffer from insomnia may be due to lack of melatonin. Melatonin can be an effective natural remedy for people with insomnia, since it can help in regulating the internal body clock back to normal.

What is Melatonin:

Melatonin is a natural occurring hormone that is produced by the pineal gland found in the brain. Melatonin’s function can be triggered every time a person closes his or her eyes, because every time a person closes his or her eyes, the amount of light is decreased. The amount and how often melatonin is secreted into the blood determines a person’s internal body clock, which regulates the sleep and wake cycle.

Melatonin and Seniors:

We can usually observe that most seniors find it hard to fall asleep, this is because, as a person ages, the pineal gland produces less melatonin hormone. Aside from aging, there are many possible factors that can influence the amount of melatonin production and secretion, which can possibly lead to insomnia.

Melatonin is very famous in treating or improving insomnia. Taking in of melatonin supplements or melatonin-rich foods, it can help in increasing the amount of melatonin in the body, which can lead to a better regulation of the internal body clock, thus resulting to better quality sleep and falling asleep faster. Different researches and studies suggest that melatonin is not only effective in inducing sleep by regulating a normal cycle of the internal body clock, but it can also act as a powerful antioxidant that can help in detoxifying the body from harmful toxins, and boost the immune system.

Natural Sources of Melatonin:

Foods that are rich with melatonin are abundant and can come from a wide variety. Here are some common foods that contain high amounts of melatonin.

  • Oats
  • Sweet Corn
  • Rice
  • Olive Oil
  • Ginger
  • Barley
  • Tomatoes
  • Bananas
  • Radish
  • Grape Skins
  • Tart Cherries
  • Walnuts
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Almonds
  • Fruits, such as Apples, Oranges, Strawberries, Kiwi, and many more.
