Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders not just in America, but all over the world as well. Insomnia is characterized by inability to fall asleep and staying asleep every night. Insomnia, when not properly treated and managed, can produce several medical conditions that can affect a person’s overall quality of life. There are different approaches for its management. It may be pharmacological management (medications), non-pharmalogical management (therapies), and/or natural ways of its management. In this article, I will provide information regarding foods that can help in improving symptoms of various sleep disorders in a natural way.

Sleep disorders can really have negative effects on people’s lives. Getting enough amounts of sleep every single night is very important to keep us going all throughout the day and letting us function at our best in performing activities of daily living. Managing such problems naturally can be beneficial to our health. One of the most common natural management of insomnia is through eating foods with certain compositions that can improve symptoms of sleep disorders and improve sleep and wake cycle.

Naturally Managing Sleep Disorders: 3 Foods to Improve Insomnia

  1. Pumpkin Seeds are abundant with magnesium. Magnesium deficiency can be a cause of insomnia, which is why, pumpkin seeds can be beneficial as the provide enough Magnesium. Magnesium can help in relieving stress, which can also cause sleeping problems in some people. Pumpkin seeds are considered to be one of the best sources of magnesium.
  2. Cottage cheese contains tryptophan. Tryptophan is a type of amino acid that can induce sleep by producing relaxation effects of the mind and the entire body. Other foods, such as tofu, soy milk, and lentils are also good sources of the amino acid, tryptophan.
  3. Brown rice can be beneficial in treating sleep disorders like insomnia. Brown rice has a component that can help in calming the mind by soothing the nervous system. When the nervous system is soothed, it can help a person in falling asleep. Aside from brown rice, eating natural oats can also produce similar effects with brown rice.

How Can Diet Prevent Sleep Disorders

If there are foods that can help in improving symptoms, there are also foods that can induce or cause. Following a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle can improve health and be beneficial in preventing sleep disorders.
