Asthma sleep problems - lack of sleep due to nocturnal asthma

Asthma Sleep Problems | Symptoms And Causes

Asthma Sleep Problems: Causes

Asthma is chronic condition of the lungs where the airway becomes constricted, making it harder for the person to breath. The airway becomes inflamed and constricted due to a lot of factors.

This may be caused by the following items:

  • allergens,
  • stress,
  • foods,
  • weather,
  • smoke,
  • colds,
  • emotions,
  • and a lot more

These are the causes of the constriction of the airway, but the real cause of asthma is still unknown. Some say that the genetic factor of the person plays a big part on why he has asthma; there are also some who claim obesity as the cause of asthma. Whatever the cause of asthma is, the bottom line is to properly manage its symptoms because it is a serious medical condition that can put the life of a person at risk.

Asthma Sleep Problems: Symptoms Experienced By the Persons

Asthma sleep problems – lack of sleep due to nocturnal asthma

The symptoms of asthma simply do not end on the person’s inability to breathe properly. It can also affect the sleeping pattern of a person. This is the time a person experiences asthma sleep problems. During an asthma attack, a person experiences nighttime coughing, breathlessness and wheezing. This makes it difficult for the person to sleep well. The cause of these nocturnal disturbances from asthma is not yet clear. Whether it is caused by the circadian rhythm factor of the body or the sleep itself contributes to the occurrence of nighttime disturbances, there are still no clear conclusions for it.

Why do Asthma Sleep Problems Happen?

There are several mechanisms of the body that somehow give a clue on why asthma sleep problems happen. For people who are already experiencing an asthma attack, the symptoms become worse at night. First, the airway resistance increases at night time, regardless of whether the person is sleeping or not. However, it has been observed that the airway resistance is greater when the person sleeps. Second, the function of the airway is best before the onset of sleep, but it decreases as the sleep of a person progresses. This just means that the longer the person with asthma sleeps, the greater the impairment of his lungs is. This is true for all people, but it the effects are worse on people with asthma.

Recommendation to All The Sufferers Of Asthma Sleep Problem

Be sure to consult your health care provider if ever you are experiencing these symptoms. There is no absolute cure for asthma, but it can be controlled and its symptoms can be managed. The asthma sleep problems can also be managed by medications that can help you breathe easily. Having enough sleep is very important. Sleeping should never be taken for granted because it is the only way you can get the energy that your body needs.
