Sleep Disorders Due to Contraceptive Pills - Birth Control Pills

Sleep Disorders Due to Contraceptive Pills

Posted on January 23, 2012

Contraceptive pills in more than one way have a number of side effects, and they can cause sleep disorders since they disrupt the hormonal balance of the human body.

Contraceptive Pills and Their Effect on the Human Body

Contraceptive pills have been termed ‘safe’, however they still have a number of side effects. These pills contain hormones that affect the way a woman’s body behaves, in the sense that they stop the egg from being fertilized by the male sperm. This stops a woman from getting pregnant and they are quite reliable, but they come along with some side effects. These side effects usually pass away within a week and include nausea, headaches, breast tenderness, pelvic pains, spotting of blood between periods and weight gain. The side effects include sleep disorders as well, insomnia being one of them.

The Link between Sleep Disorders and Contraceptive Pills

Many a times women blame insomnia on things like stress, this is true, but it has been observed that contraceptive pills have a part to play in this as well. See, all these hormonal imbalances can cause a loss of sleep, pelvic pains will not let you get a good nights’ sleep, and same is the case with breast tenderness, headaches, and nausea. All of these things can disrupt the sleep cycle of a deep sleeper. And if that isn’t enough there is always a kind of a fear in the back of your mind that you might just pregnant and that the pill won’t work. When all of these worries and pains are combined they can have a serious impact on your sleep and you have to face insomnia. This is a terrible thing itself, with all your hearts you just want to sleep but some how you cant, you try reading, watching a movie, songs, but some how nothing seems to work and a lack of sleep can have a huge impact on your mood and your work.

How to Make Sure you get Some Sleep

Firstly if a particular brand of contraceptive pills makes you an insomniac, try shifting to another brand. Since the composition of every brand is slightly different there is always a chance that it may suit you better and you won’t have to stay up all night trying to sleep.

Going to sleep is all about making your mind completely blank and just try not to think about anything, don’t even think about sleeping, just close your eyes and relax. Also, make it a habit not to drink caffeine or any sugary foods before going to bed. A lot of people have trouble sleeping even if there is a bit of light coming in, and sleeping in complete darkness often makes you get up completely fresh and feeling relaxed. Being calm is another thing that can help you sleep, so try listening to soothing music, a light hearted movie, or a nice novel to get you to fall asleep.

Lastly, stay away from sleeping pills unless your doctor prescribes them to you, they are addictive and they can make you get dependant on them, they also have a psychological effect so its better if you can avoid them. Its better to use herbs that have a soothing effect on the nerves and they wont even have any side effects since it is all natural.
