Types of Sleeping Problems in Adults

There exists a surprising range of sleep problems in adults. Sleep is very important, and when sleeping problems in adults arise, their bodies cannot function to its full potential. Adults are susceptible to stress, which is one of the primary factors than can lead to sleep problems. Some of the common disorders that are known are: insomnia, sleep talking, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, night terrors and night walking. Sleep disorders may occur at any stage of life, but some are more common and more evident in adults. For example, sleep apnea, which is marked by the momentary stop in breathing while one sleeps, is a disorder which is uncommon for young people.

Adult sleep problems can be categorized to different groups:

  • Dyssomnia – has two sub-categories: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic dyssomnia includes problems which are brought about by

    environmental and pathological aspects. On the other hand, intrinsic dyssomnia refers to disorders caused by problems found within the body itself.

  • Parasomnias – these types of sleeping disorders include those that involve unnatural and abnormal movements, behaviours, perception and dreams while one sleeps. The most known types of parasomnias are: sleep talking, bed-wetting and teeth grinding.

Sleep disorders within adults are commonly not light-threatening. However, one must know that a number of these disorders may pose danger for an individual’s health. For this reason, recognizing sleep disorders in adults is a must.

Causes of Sleep Problems in Adults

Some people argue that adults suffer from more stress than younger people. Most adults have the added worry of working, paying for bills, sustaining a family’s lifestyle, and much more. These problems, which are brought by stress, may possibly be short-lived. However, for some people, they can be a chronic condition which leads to many sleepless nights and the misery of being tired all the time. This in turn may lead to poor work performance and irritability, which only makes matters worse.

A common feature of sleep disorders in adults is that these problems tend to become self re-enforcing. Meaning, an adult may become even more stressed and anxious because of the fact that they are not getting the sleep they need, and this leads to making the problem even worse.

Treatments for Sleep Disorders in Adults

Most sleep problems that adults suffer from can usually be solved with solutions such as sticking to a regular routine, finding the time to relax, and natural remedies. Aside from that, there are many other available treatments for different disorders. There’s therapy or medication (such as melatonin). Most of the time, adults are not able to turn to these two treatments because of the cost of their side effects, but they still are valid options that one may consider.

Sleep is necessary for our body’s optimal health, and it shouldn’t be something that is taken for granted. For that reason, researching more about sleep problems in adults may help you greatly, especially if you suspect that you are suffering from a specific disorder.

  1. .i haven’t slept well in years i average around 3 to 4 hours anight but that is between waking up also….during day time if i sleep any i wake up feeling great.but 2 to 3 hours later i start feeling question is why do i wake feeling good then 2 hours later i feel bad…everyone i spoke with it’s. Just the opisate , .
